Self-deprecating Humor: George Strait and I were on the radio!

If you have been reading my blog, by now you know of me being technologically challenged. If you haven’t been reading my blog, it won’t take you long to figure out I’m challenged in many ways.

Technology is growing exponentially every year. Just take a moment and think about the technology on your late model vehicles compared to just five or six years ago. Jan’s new 2010 Toyota Avalon will automatically slow down if you drive up behind a car while using the cruise control. I don’t know if I want my car making driving decisions for me!

My Ford pick-up has Sync Radio. I first heard of the voice activated Sync radio a few years back. I had seen it advertised on TV. Its voice activation feature allows you to simply tell it what kind of music you want to listen to and it will find it in a shuffle, and then play it for you.

I spoke at St. Simon’s Island, Georgia a couple of years back and we went a day early so we could rent a car and check out the area. I couldn’t believe our luck. The car we rented was a Lincoln and it had Sync Radio. I couldn’t wait to get on the highway and try it. I threw gravel all over the car as I sped onto the highway. I turned the radio on and leaned in toward it and said, “Country.” Sure enough, George Strait came on the radio.

When George got through, I leaned in and said, “Vintage Rock n’ Roll” and ZZ Top came on the radio. I thought I would really give it a test and said, “Easy Listening.” Nora Jones came on the radio. About the same time a long, black limo flew past me and then cut in front of me. I yelled, “Arrogant Jerk!” Donald Trump came on the radio!

After buying my pick-up a few months back, Jan and I were riding down the highway in it and had the Sync Radio playing in the background. I had told it “Country” so we were listening to our favorite music. Suddenly, a jacked-up pick-up with a “My Trailer Hitch Has The Blood of Tailgaters On It” bumper sticker pulled out in front of me.  I hit my brakes and yelled “Redneck Idiot!” I CAME ON THE RADIO! Yep, Sync radio really does work.

There is not a better way to cope with stress than laughing at one’s self. It puts us in charge and also tells others we have a lot of self-confidence. It says we’re human, far from perfect and not afraid to acknowledge it. I always look for ways to laugh at myself…if Donald Trump ever reads this; I hope he feels the same way.
